Magnetic Properties of Ultra-Thin MBE-Grown Co/Au/Co Trilayers

In order to investigate the coupling effect between two layers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), we have performed Brillouin light scattering and magneto--optic Kerr effect measurements for ultra--thin MBE grown Co/Au/Co trilayers with the Au interlayer? thickness being changed. We observed a series of transitions from a single layer with in--plane anisotropy to a single layer with PMA, and finally to a double--layer each of which has own PMA. We also observed a transition from an antiferromagnetic coupling to a ferromagnetic coupling, by just adding a submonolayer of Au interlayer.
