Hydroxyapatite Formation on Bioactive Glass-Ceramics in the System of CaO-SiO2-P2O5

Four types of glass-ceramics in the system of CaO-SiO2-P2O5 were prepared, and reacted in a simulated body fluid(SBF). Hydroxyapatite formation phenomena in the solution on the surface of glass-ceramics were studied in terms of crystalline phases in the glass-ceramics after heat-treatment. The reacted surfaces were examined by XRD, FT-IRRS. When the glasses were heat-treated, the major crystalline phases were a wollastonite and an oxyapatite. The hydroxyapatite formation rate on the glass-ceramics with oxyapatite crystal was much lower than that in glass-ceramics with wollastonite. The hydroxyapatite formation behavior in the glass-ceramics was also compared with that of the corresponding glasses.
