EFFECT OF ALCOHOL ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA IN PATIENTS WITH LIVER CIRRHOSIS CAUSED BY HEPATITIS B VIRUS: A CASE-CONTROL STUDY

초록

INTRODUCTION: The risk factors for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) are age, gender, HBeAg, HBV DNA level, and alcohol intake. However, most of those are also risk factors for liver cirrhosis (LC). In HCC associated with hepatitis B virus (HBV), 80-90% of cases have underlying LC. Furthermore, LC is the most important risk factor for HCC. Therefore, the evaluation of the risk factors for HCC is more ideal in patients with LC than in patients with chronic hepatitis. Alcohol intake is one of the important risk factors for HCC. However, there are still controversies about the effect of cumulative alcohol intake on the development of HCC in patients with LC.
