An Analysis of the Consumer Financial Management Service Business on the Internet

In Korea, financial advices have been usually provided by banks, brokerage firms, and insurance companies, only for the customers with high net worth. With the development of Internet, however, on-line business which brings financial services to mass market becomes utilized rapidly. This study analyzed financial services on the internet with respect to the quantity and quality of information, financial advice services, simulation tools, and PFM(Personal Financial Management) solution. The study found that most financial service portal sites, banks, brokerage firms, and insurance companies offered financial related information, financial advice services, and simulation tools, but only a few provided PFM solution. Correct information and simulation tools are very helpful for the self-directed consumers who mostly make their own financial decisions, and financial advice services are pretty useful for those seeking specific advice about taxes, estate planning, or risk management. However, the study suggested that PFM solution, i.e., an integrated service for one's lifetime financial planning, should be more developed and offered in order to cover a strong need for financial planning of mass consumers.
