A Study on an Applicability of Eroticism to Architectural Design

Abstract The study deals with a classical discourse on the relationship between painting and architecture. Unlike previous discourse on paintings and architecture, however, the main argument in this thesis is not focused on such material aspects as figure and composition but placed in rather poetic and mental aspects. To put it concretely, the study attempts to read eroticism through an analysis of Egon Schiele’s painting, to reinterpret his notion of eroticism to apply to architecture, and to advance the previous idea of eroticism in architecture, which has been on everybody's lips. Focused upon how to associate Schiele’s painting with architecture, the study classifies the cases of architectural eroticism into sensual desire and voyeuristic desire, sadistic desire and masochistic desire. Then, the study analyzes Schiele’s eroticism in association with duality and deconstructionism, death and direct eroticism.
