Arrangement of Grounding Grids for Reducing the Ground Surface Potential Gradients

The major objective of this study is to develop the means for protecting a person and microelectronic equipments against lightning-caused dangerous voltages. Fundamental backgrounds for the protection of a person against dangerous ground surface potential rises are briefly introduced, and a reduction of ground surface potential gradient of the test grounding system is examined. Attention is forced on experimental evaluations of the performanceand characteristics with the arrangement and installation method for grounding grids. Experiments were carried out with the impulse currents as a function of the arrangement of grounding grids. An installation method of the inclined auxiliary grounding grids was proposed to overcome the drawbacks of equally spaced grounding grids, i.e., an appropriate design concept for the installation of grounding grids was found. It is shown that the inclined auxiliary grounding grid can decrease the maximum potential gradients on the ground surface and can also enhance the level of safety for persons and electronic equipments.
