Preparation of Porous Biodegradable Polymeric Materials using High Internal Phase Emulsion Polymerization based on a Eutectic Mixture of δ-valerolactone and L-lactide

This study focuses on the synthesis of porous biodegradable polymeric materials based on a biodegradable eutectic mixture composed of L-lactide(L-LA) and δ-valerolactone (δ-VL) using high internal phase emulsion (HIPE) polymerization. using star-shaped polylactide as a macroinitiator. High internal phase emulsions of L-LA/δ-VL eutectic mixtures were successfully induced in oil-in-water mixture solution in tetradecane. Various macroinitiators with linear and star-branched with four-arms or six arms were employed to synthesize polymers with various chain architectures. The mechanical and thermal properties of final PolyHIPEs improved with an increase in the number of functional groups; in particular, the size of the droplets reduced and dense pores formed to create an interconnected network.
