Ecofeminism and the Politics of Donna Haraway’s Idea on the Population Problem

초록

Donna Haraway argues that global overpopulation is a major environmental problem that compounds the climate crisis. The increase of the human population on the planet from eight billion to eleven billion by 2100 is expected to bring about rapid ecosystem damage and the mass extinction of nonhuman species. To counter the Great Acceleration, Haraway encourages the making of generative oddkin instead of babies, nurturing the critters of the earth while refusing to submit to the hope that techno-science will save us. In Staying with the Trouble: Making Kin in the Chthulucene, Haraway offers a reconfiguration of nonhuman and human kinship through practices of sympoiesis and communities of compost in order to imagine more livable future and more sustainable refugia for the survival of all earthly inhabitants. This paper examines Haraway’s provocative concepts of terraforming, oddkin making, sympoiesis, symbiogenesis, and children of compost in relation to the ecofeminist perspectives on climate change.
