초록
This study aims to analyze the folktale “The Fairy and the Woodcutter” from a comparative literature perspective to understand the relationship between mothers and sons in Korean culture. The folktale ‘The Fairy and the Woodcutter’ has various versions passed down, and among them, a comparative analysis of the ‘woodcutter’s return to the earthly realm’ from Japan, Vietnam, and Korea was conducted to explore the mother-child relationship expressed within them. As a result, in Korea’s ‘The Fairy and the Woodcutter,’ it was found that the old mother plays a decisive role in the separation of the fairy and the woodcutter. Unlike Japan and Vietnam, where the separation of the fairy and the woodcutter is due to the existential difference between the celestial and earthly realms, in Korea, the presence of the old mother causes the woodcutter to remain on earth, which signifies that the mother-child relationship in Korea has a very strong sense of solidarity. Additionally, in Korea, the narrative in which the fairy takes all her children with her to the celestial realm is the only version passed down, and this narrative further emphasizes the uniqueness of the mother-child relationship in Korea. This is in contrast to the stories of other ethnic groups where the fairy folktales viewed from an intercultural perspective serve as useful texts for understanding one's own culture and other cultures. This study allows us to understand the uniqueness of the mother-child relationship in Korea.
