Assessment of neuroprotective effect of C-phycocyanin on astrocytes via anti-oxidative effect

Almost many neurological diseases are associated with reactive oxygen species (ROS). Medications currently used cannot cure the disease completely, but alleviate the symptoms. It is necessary to develop new drugs to treat neuronal disease via reducing the ROS. C-phycocyanin (C-Pc), a pigment protein of microalgae, is known that having a variety of pharmacological effects such as anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and neuroprotective by in vivo and in vitro test. In this study, neuroprotective effect of c-Pc was confirmed by in vivo MCAO model through the nasal administration reducing infarct size and volume. C-pc was also treated to in vitro primary astrocyte under oxidative stress and then intracellular ROS was reduced and the mRNA expression of anti-oxidative enzymes was enhanced. Thus, c-Pc could be considered as an effective drug candidate for treatment of neuronal disease caused by ROS
