초록
This presentation provides a theoretical and empirical analysis of conception of children, child development, and parent-child relationship in Korea. The first part of this presentation examines the meaning of having a child, raising a child, and the role that a child plays in traditional Korean family and society, focusing specifically on Confucian model of human relationship. The second part of this presentation will review the impact of social change (e.g., urbanization, industrialization) on family structure, parent-child relation, child socialization and fertility rate in Korea. Third, the present researchers will provide a review of an empirical studies conducted in Korea, using the framework and instrument developed by Trommsdorff and Nauck (2001). Analysis of the relationship among the three-generation samples (i.e., adolescents, mothers, and maternal grandmothers) will be the focus. The results will be compared to other studies that have been conducted in Korea. Finally, implications of the study, especially with the rapidly declining fertility rate in Korea, will be discussed in detail.
