A contact detection algorithm between deformable bodies in 2-D finite element analysis

The proposed contact searching algorithm in the present paper is developed and applied to the rigid-plastic finite element program based on incremental quasi-static procedure [2]. We divided the contact searching algorithm into two stages: global search and local search. The global search intends roughly to find candidates of contact elements that may be in contact with the nodes and its main objective is to speed up the contact searching procedure. This stage is performed by using geometrically defined boundary territories which are occupied by the boundary elements of two deforming bodies. The duty of the local search is to detect exactly contact points among all candidate elements from the results of global search to finish the contact searching procedure by updating the boundary conditions. We applied the least square method and inner products of vectors for local searching in the present paper
