초록
This study explores the core design principles and educational mechanisms of a birdwatching-based ecological program for cultivating adolescents' intercultural sensitivity. Motivated by the limitation of conventional multicultural education—centered on cognitive understanding rather than emotional empathy and behavioral practice-this study focused on the convergence of intercultural and ecological education, which share the philosophical foundations of ‘coexistence’ and ‘interdependence’. Three rounds of Focus Group Interviews (FGI) were conducted with six experts from the two fields, followed by qualitative content analysis. The analysis derived five core design principles-open metaphor, suspension of judgment, respect for life, visual intuitiveness, and an ecology of hospitality-which may function as a mechanism stimulating the four phases of intercultural sensitivity (recognizing difference, acceptance, perspective-taking, and action) in a non-linear and cyclical manner through the pre-, on-site, and post-activity experiences of birdwatching. By proposing a design that transfers ecological coexistence into intercultural coexistence through post-activity reflection, this study lays a theoretical and practical foundation for a convergent approach between ecological and intercultural education. As a design study grounded in expert review, however, this study did not apply the program to actual learners; empirical verification of its effects remains a task for future research.
