Taylor-Couette Flow with Parametric Excitation of the Cylinders

Characteristics of time-periodic Taylor-Couette flow between two concentric cylinders of finite axial length have been numerically studied with a fixed radius ratio (0.8) and a fixed aspect ratio (114). We consider a simpler case in which the outer cylinder is at rest and the inner one is oscillating at a mean angular velocity. With a given oscillation amplitude and a given mean angular velocity, we investigate the changes of Taylor vortices by varying the frequency of the inner cylinder. With a low frequency of modulation, we find that Taylor vortices appear and disappear periodically. With a higher frequency, Taylor vortices do not disappear, but the intensity of Taylor vortices modulates periodically. As the frequency increases, Taylor vortices modulate sinusoidally.
