A Novel Recycling Method for Waste Cellulose: Electrorheological Application of Waste Coffee Grounds and Dust

Waste coffee grounds (WCG) were mixed with dust of equal weight percentage, and its 5 vol.% mixture was dispersed in silicone oil to prepare WCG/dust-based ER fluid. Due to their particle polarity, WCG and dust particles were suitable for electrorheological fluids. The micro-surface structure of the particles was studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Using a rheometer, by applying external electric fields of different strengths to the electrorheological fluid, the electrorheological properties, flow curve, dynamic modulus, etc. were obtained, and the viscoelastic properties of ER fluid in the presence of an electric field were further studied by calculating the data. The obtained yield stress versus applied electric field strength had a slope of 1.5, indicating that the ER fluid follows a polarization mechanism. In addition, the polarization analysis of electrorheological fluid was measured by an LCR meter. The above conclusions show that this mixture can be used as a smart electrorheological material.
