The recent ventilated disk brake adopts the cross-drilled hole on the frictional surface to improve the cooling and gas discharge performance of the brake. The potential of the crack originator, which is affected by the machining pattern on the frictional surface of the disk brake, became higher with pattern machining because the pattern works like a defect on the surface. In this paper, the use of the chamfer machined on the cross-drilled hole was investigated as a method of preventing crack generation. Several design parameters, such as the depth, length, and curvature of the chamfer, were selected and analyzed in accordance with the design of the experiment method, using finite-element analysis. As a result, it was revealed that crack generation was affected by the length, diameter, and depth, in descending order of major contribution. This shows that a longer, shallower, and smaller-diameter chamfer will result in a lower potential for crack generation. Copyright © 2018 KSAE / 152-08.
