Polymer rods with gradient index (GRIN) distribution have been fabricated with or without imposing cintrifugal forces. Low molecular weight compounds with high refractive index(dopants) were spatially distributed in polymethylenemethacrylate matrix during the process. GRIN profile was found to be systematically affected by several parameters : the type and the amount of dopant, the state of PMMA into which solvent/dopant mixture is penetrated and distributed, and the imposition of centrifugal force. Obtained results were used in the fabrication of radial GRIN rods which is known to be useful as a preform for the production of graded index plastic optical fiber(GI POF). In addition, the formation of GRIN distribrtion was simualted numerically on the basis of dissolution-disassociation model.
