Cavernous Nitric Oxide staining as a promising diagnostic test for neurogenic impotence

Recently, it was also reported that Nitric oxide synthase(NOS) histochemistry provide important insight into the cavernous nerve integrity of the patients with radical pelvic surgery. The present study was undertaken to elucidate whether NOS histochemical staining has a diagnostic value to reflect status of cavernous nerve in impotent patietns with various causes. In conclusion, the staining pattern of cavernous nerve fibers for NADPH diaphorase correlated excellently with neurogenic or non-neurogenic etiology of erectile impotence. This staining method may be clinically useful to directly diagnose neurgenic impotence and to quantitatively evaluate cavernous nerve integrity in patients with neurogenic impotence.
