Redesigning Parcel Transportation Networks Considering Realistic Constraints and a Potential Future Scenario: A Case Study of Korea Post

초록

Postal organizations worldwide face growing challenges in parcel transportation networks due to rising parcel volumes and the decline of traditional mail. This study, conducted in collaboration with Korea Post, investigates the optimal location for a new mega hub to strengthen parcel transportation and strategically respond to evolving demand. We develop a tailored mathematical optimization model that minimizes demand-weighted total travel distance across collection, transportation, and distribution processes. The model incorporates realistic constraints, including subnetwork structures, service coverage, capacity limits, and transportation ratios. In addition, we evaluate a strategic scenario, which involves reconfiguring the existing network after the hub’s construction. Numerical experiments using real-world data identify the optimal hub location and associated flows under varying future conditions. The findings highlight potential challenges in direct implementation, suggest an incremental transition strategy, and provide actionable recommendations for long-term network success. Overall, the study illustrates the practical value of optimization models in guiding postal organizations to redesign transportation networks and adapt to surging parcel demand in metropolitan areas.
