In this paper I explore two meanings of taysin and their logical properties. I first argue that the two meanings are manifestations of making and not making a choice and their results. The replacement meaning of taysin illustrates that some entity or event has not been chosen--in other words, has been rejected-and the contrastiveness or ‘in return’ meaning of taysin, that some event or state has been chosen. While the taysin with the latter usage is interpreted as a monotone increasing function, the taysin with the former usage, as an anti-additive function. This mathematical characterization of the replacement taysin provides a natural account of the fact that it licenses weak or strong negative polarity items like te isang, but not superstrong negative polarity items like amwu_to, which are said in the literature to be licensed by an anti-morphic function. I finally show that all the usages of taysin are the consequence of interactions between its syntactic constraint, its two meanings and their logical properties, and pragmatic considerations of the context it is used.
