A Study on the Features of Dépaysement Technique Exhibited in Contemporary Urban Design

Abstract While it becomes the main architectural discourse in the 21st century how to heal the devastated modern city, the ideal of traditional modernism is, on the other hand, still taken to be a paradigm to devise such mega projects as a thematic city and a ubiquitous information city. The study argues how to re-conceptualize such universal and uniform space while maintaining the intrinsic characteristic of the city in this transitional period, and how to map out new design strategies that shift today's unified notion on urban regeneration. The main argument is focused on the art techniques that make the recreation of a city possible and particularly on the applicability of surrealistic approaches which seem irrational but are based on human nature. The study attempts to explore the ways to apply technique of surrealistic dépaysement to urban design, to examine the possible ways to conduct a chance meeting of each individual object occurred in the city, and to investigate the ways to create the landscape of events, in which everydayness is newly discovered through those chances. The main purpose of this study is, therefore, to establish a theoretical frame and methodology which fit to contemporary urban design through diverse case studies that display the applicability of dépaysement technique to urban design.
