Effect of Temperature and Concentration on Anesthetic Efficacy of MS-222 and 2-Phenoxyethanol in Spotted Sea Bass

초록

This study evaluates the potential of 2-phenoxyethanol (2-PE) as an alternative to MS222 for anesthetizing juvenile spotted sea bass (Lateolabrax maculatus) across varying temperatures and concentrations. Induction times ranged from 24.3 to 343.9 seconds for MS-222 and 62.4 to 334.0 seconds for 2-PE, while recovery times ranged from 100.8 to 402.9 seconds for MS-222 and 103.8 to 313.6 seconds for 2-PE. At constant temperatures, induction times for both anesthetics decreased significantly, while recovery times increased with rising concentrations (p<0.05). In contrast, at constant concentrations, induction and recovery times for MS-222 and 2-PE significantly decreased with increasing temperatures, except for induction times of 2-PE (p<0.05). To achieve complete anesthesia within 3 minutes and recovery within 5 minutes, the optimal doses were determined as 200 mg/L at 12°C and 400 mg/L at 15 and 18°C for MS-222, and 600 mg/L at all temperatures for 2-PE. MS-222 and 2-PE proved effective, with 2-PE achieving faster induction and recovery times at optimal doses and temperatures.
