Improvement in resistance performance of a barge by air lubrication

Improvement in resistance performance of a barge by air lubrication has been sought numerically and experimentally. Various shapes of the air supplying nozzles are tested to find the optimum configurations. It is found that air cavity length is sensitive to the slope of the nozzle and height of the slope also plays an important role. Increase in height and slope of the nozzle, hoever, increases the form resistance and may cause increase in the total resistance. In the present study, careful selection of the air supplying device and conditions have achieved about 10% reduction in the total resistance of the barge with a single air nozzle. Further reductions in resistance are possible with the present method. However, more refinement in experimental and numerical methods is neccessary before used for resistance reduction of a practical ship.
