Surge Protective Device Combined with Varistors and LC Filter on AC power Mains

This paper deals woth the two-stage surge protective device by using varistor and LC low pass filter. Recently varistor alone has been with overvoltage protective devices on the AC power nains, and it has several prdblems associated with high renmant voltages and noises. In this work, in order to improve the clamping performance of surge protective device, the lightning surge protective device having two-stage hybrid circuit for an AC single phase power mains was designed and fabricated. Operational characteristics and surge clamping performance of the surge protective device in an 8/20us surge current are investigated. As a result, it was found that proposed two-stage protective device on AC power mains has a variety of advantages such as a lower cutoff voltage, high frequency noise restraint and large clamping capacity.
