Conformally-networked MWCNTs on glass fiber fabric with low electrical resistivity and tunneling activation energy

In application of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and its composites in electronic devices, the tunneling activation energy and the temperature dependence on the resistance of the composites and electrode contact are among the most important parameters for power consumption and application. In this study, MWCNTs were coated on glass fiber (GF) fabric with low electrical conductivity using a series of dipping-drying processes to form a conformally-deposited MWCNT network. The transfer length method was employed to quantify the activation energy and the temperature dependence of the resistance. The conformal deposition of MWCNT with a low volume of 1.21 vol% on the GF fabric induced a low activation energy of 0.010 eV and a low electrical resistivity of 2.471 Omega<middle dot>cm with a characteristic of negative temperature coefficient of resistance (NTCR), as well as a low level of contact resistance with an Ag electrode. The electrical characteristic of the conformal MWCNT network means that the conductive fabric can be utilized as a flexible heater with a low value of power consumption. Highlights Conformal MWCNT deposition reduced activation energy and electrical resistance. The transfer length method is suitable for quantifying the activation energy. MWCNT network on fabric provides a uniform temperature and low contact resistance. The composite can be utilized as a flexible, low-power electronic component.
