First Record of the Freshwater Neritid Septaria porcellana (Gastropoda: Neritidae) from Korea

초록

The freshwater neritid Septaria porcellana (Linnaeus, 1758) is reported for the first time from the Republic of Korea. Specimens were collected from an intertidal zone heavily influenced by coastal freshwater springs on Jeju Island. Species identification was confirmed based on morphological characteristics of the shell and operculum, combined with molecular and phylogenetic analyses using the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. This finding represents the currently known northernmost occurrence of the species, extending its range from subtropical regions. The collected population inhabited a freshwater pool supplied by coastal freshwater springs, which may function as a thermal refuge for the settlement and overwintering of planktonic larvae transported by the Tsushima Warm Current, but further environmental monitoring is needed to confirm this hypothesis.
