Pleomorphic hyalinizing angiectatic tumor of soft parts

Pleomorphic hyalinizing angiectatic tumor (PHAT) of soft parts is a recently describe neoplasm that most commonly affects the lower extremities. It is locally aggressive but has not been known to metastasize. We present a case of a soft tissue tumor on the left inguinal area that was identified as pleomorphic hyalinizing angiectatic tumor of soft parts. A 35-year-old woman presented with a slowly growing subcutaneous mass on left inguinal area. The excised mass was not encapsulated byt relatively well circumscribed and measured 4.5x3.0x2.0cm. The cut surface showed brownish white, ectatic and irregular shaped cleft-like spaces. Histologically, the tumor was composed of sheets of mitotically inactive oval and pleomorphic cells with intranuclear cytoplasmic inclusions, and clusters of ectatic vessels with perivascular hyalinization. Mono- and multinucleated giant cells were also present. A hemangiopericytoma-like pattern of vascularity, pseudovascular spaces and stromal collagen with degenerative change were observed. The tumor cells showed immunoreactivity for vimentin and CD34 and negative for S-100 protein. The patient was well with no evidence of disease for 4 months.
