Ionization Characteristics of a Ground Rod with radial needles under Lightning Impulse

This paper presents characteristics of soil ionization when high voltage lightning impulse is applied to a ground rod with radial needles. Ionization characteristics in soil are analyzed with I-V curve and impedance curve according to various charging voltage of the impulse generator. The ionization near the ground rod contributes to reduction of ground impedance and limits the ground potential rise effectively in high resistivity soil.
