Review of Wireless Sensors for Road and Bridge Asset Management

According to the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, the price of social infrastructure asset, including nation-wide roads, railways, airports, harbors, water and sewage systems, and water resources management facilities, amounted to 515.2 trillion won as of 2004 (Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs, 2007). When it comes to social infrastructure, the emphasis has been placed on the construction aspect for decades. But the need is being raised for more comprehensive management of the infrastructure. In most of developed countries, infrastructure asset management has been implemented for the effective and efficient operation and management of infrastructure. Infrastructure asset management is also being implemented in Korea. The purpose of this study was to review the current data collection methods to help implement better asset management and to address the need to utilize wireless sensor technologies and propose implementation strategies for the implementation.
