A Pragmatic Account of the Person Constraint of Private Predicates.

초록

Noh, Eun-Ju. 2017. A Pragmatic Account of the Person Constraint of Private Predicates. Journal of Korean Linguistics 43-1. 21-42. It has been claimed that Korean private predicates have to be used with a first person subject in statements. The person constraint has been analyzed as a syntactic or morpho-syntactic phenomenon. In this paper, within the framework of relevance theory, I suggest that the sentences with a private predicate be divided into representations (or descriptions) and metarepresentations. If the sentence ends with a declarative sentence-type suffix, it is the speaker's description of a state of affairs, which is constrained by the person constraint. If the sentence is used with an epistemic (including evidential) marker, it is a metarepresentation of the speaker’s own private representation, where the person constraint is lifted. In the case of an attributive metarepresentation, such as reported speech, the person constraint is imposed on the original representation. Thus, non-first-person subject can be used if it was a first person in the original representation. In Korean, these attributive metarepresentations have to be used with an explicit marker (like a verb of saying or a hearsay particle). Finally, I conclude that since the imposition of a person constraint on private predicates is pragmatically determined, the constraint can better be explained as a pragmatic phenomenon.
