A Study on the Perception of Korean Volleyball and the Introduction of the Asian Quarter System Among Male College Volleyball Players

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to diagnose the current status and strengths and weaknesses of Korean volleyball sports, investigate the background for introducing the Asian Quarter system and its potential impact on Korean volleyball, and explore the direction for future development of Korean volleyball sports. Method: For this purpose, a survey was conducted from March to May 2023 on the perception of Korean volleyball and the Asian Quarter system, targeting a total of 83 male college volleyball players in Korea. Result: The results of the status and perception survey on Korean volleyball sports are as follows. Firstly, Korean volleyball was perceived as being of average level within Asia and somewhat low level globally. Secondly, the strengths of Korean volleyball were considered to be the good basics, but blocking and height were perceived as weaknesses. Thirdly, opinions were divided on the salary cap system, and fourthly, the system related to foreign players was perceived positively. The results of the perception survey related to the introduction of the Asian Quarter system showed that, firstly, it was perceived to have a positive impact on improving the level of domestic volleyball sports and increasing the number of spectators. However, secondly, it was perceived to have a negative impact on the development of domestic amateur players and their professional advancement. Thirdly, opinions were divided on the impact that the introduction of the Asian Quarter system would have on improving the international competitiveness of Korean volleyball. Conclusion: To develop Korean volleyball, it is necessary to secure youth players, improve training programs, introduce a secondary league system, and promote the V-League and industrial growth.
