It was possible to form mullite from lithium fluoride-added kaolin even at 700 C under the flow of any environmental gases. Nitrogen gass was the most effective, and the effect of water vapor, carbon dioxide and air was decreasing in sequence on the mullitization of kaolin. In addition to mullite, petalite could be easily formed in hot-pressed kaolin with lithium fluoride.
