Nitration of imidazole derivatives

Energetic materials with combined high efficiency and low sensitivity are always a prime concern in ammunition system. Nitration of 2-methylimidazole gave 1,1-diamino-2,2-nitroethylene (FOX-7) via 2-nitromethylene-4,5-imidazolidinedione. We investigated the nitration of N-Boc-2-methylimidazole and ethyl 2-(1-methylimidazolyl)acetate under various nitration conditions. In case of the acetate, nitration of the methylene position proceeded faster than that of the ring.
