INHIBITION OF LIVER MICROSOMAL FLAVIN-CONTAINING MONO-OXYGENASE ACTIVITY WITH BIO-FLAVONOIDS

Typically, many drugs are taken with citrus fruit juices and flavonoids contained in citrus fruit may inhibit the metabolism of drug and alter the pharmacokinetics. These results demonstrate that the bioflavonoids like QC,KF and NG contained in grapefruit juice inhibit the liver microsomal FMO activity.There for, taking drugs with citrus fruit juices will inhibit the hepatic microsomal CYP3A4, CYP1A2 and FMO activities and will interfere with pharmacokinetics of many drugs metabilized by these enzymes and thus, not recommended. Alternatively, as these enzymes are involved in the bioactivation of procarcinogens like arylamines and polyaromatic hydrocarbons to their ultimate carcinogens,general consumption of citrus fruit juices containing these bioflavonoids may prevent the induction of bladder and colorectal caused by these environmental carcinogens and thus, recommended.
