Characteristics of the Whispering-Gallery Modes in Micro-Ring Resonators

초록

We report on the resonance characteristics of the whispering-gallery modes (WGM's) in optical micro-resonators. The field distribution was numerically calculated by using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, and we obtained resonance peaks which correspond to the WGM's. We infer from this result that most of the modal energy is confined between the outer surface and inner caustic of the resonator. This result has been helpful in optimizing the width of a micro-ring waveguide to suppress the higher order mode.
