Electric and aerospace industries require novel composite materials which can be used as substitutes to the conventional epoxy resins. Cyanate ester (CE) resins have drawn a lot of interests recently, because they have good thermal, electrical and mechanical properties and better curing system compared to epoxy resin systems. Various CE resin systems have been developed and commercialized mainly in the form of aromatic CEs. However, CE resins are more brittle than epoxy resins. In this study, novel siloxane monomers containing aryl cyanate ester groups were synthesized for an application to electronic packaging materials. By incorporation of siloxane groups to the conventional aromatic CE resins, reduction of brittleness of CE resins was expected while maintaining the merits of CE resins. Dimethoxydialkylsiloxane was obtained by dichlorodialkylsilane and 4-methoxyphenol. Then the methoxy group was hydrolyzed and isocyanate groups were formed. Monomers were chracterized by IR and 1H, 13C NMR spectroscopy. Curing reaction was studied also by DSC.
