An Experiment on Emergent Urban Design through Scripting the Collective Data

The goal of the thesis is to experiment with the applicability of a strategy for Emergent Urban Des ign. The study selects Seguin Island situated in the west suburbs of Paris, the east of the Seine Riv er, which has been being in the stage of ongoing competitions for several consecutive years, to pro pose an alternative for the new town development project. The objective of the project is how to m aintain the continuity of the past in association with the future of the site to create specific sense o f place. The study attempts to make Seguin Island urban and architectural device by which the metr opolitan and suburban Paris are converged on, to characterize the Island to be a new border space, and to develop the Island to be the center located between the city and the suburbs. The study pro ceeds with an exhibition of the possibility to transform a collection of diverse design parameters dis covered everywhere in the city into the data for computing of Rhino Scripting and Grasshopper, of a procedure to compound the data of the correlation among architecture, landscape, and urbanism, and of a device to array precisely the connections of different urban blocks through scripting linkag es of each parameter.
