Background Recently, many aouthors published that systemic steroid administration has effects in the treatment of nasal polyposis. The object of this study was to evaluate the effect of systemic steroids after edoscopic sinus surgery in choronic paranasal sinusitis patients with nasal polyosis, by observing the nasal symptoms and the recurrence of polyposis in a stated periods. Method 22 cases of severe chronic paranasal sinusistis patients with nasal polyposis were selected. All 22 cases underwent endoscopic sinus surgery by the same surgeon. 12 cases out of 22 study group received 10 days of systemic steroid treatment ( Initial 50mg of methylpredinisolone for 5 days and tapering gradually) followed by topical nasal steroid spray for at least 2 months. The control group received only the topical nasal steroid spray. All patients were surveyed by there nasal symptoms (nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, post nasal drip, headache, anosmia) and investigated for the polyp recurrence by endoscopic examination. Preoperative nasal oplyposis conditions were classified by Gaskin method, and the severity of paranasal sinusitis by Harvard System. The follow-up was done 14 days, 1 month, 2 months. 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after endoscopic sinus surgery in every cases.
