초록

Islands serve as unique biogeographic environments that support distinct microbial communities, yet the bacterial diversity of Korean islands remains largely unexplored. To bridge this gap, we investigated bacterial strains obtained from coastal seawater samples collected in 2024 from four Korean islands: Somaemuldo, Donggeomdo, Gyodongdo, and Udo. Approximately 1,400 bacterial isolates were obtained using standard dilution plating, and their taxonomic identities were determined through 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis. A total of 19 strains exhibited ≥98.7% sequence similarity to validly published species not previously reported in Korea and were thus recognized as newly recorded species. These strains exhibited broad phylogenetic diversity, spanning three phyla, four classes, seven orders, 12 families, and 17 genera. These previously unreported species were classified into Epibacterium and Thalassospira within the class Alphaproteobacteria; Paraglaciecola, Colwellia, Thalassomonas, Psychromonas, Photobacterium, Vibrio, Neptunomonas, and Alkalimarinus within the class Gammaproteobacteria; Cyclobacterium, Flammeovirga, Antarcticibacterium, Wenyingzhuangia, and Zunongwangia within the class Bacteroidia; Peribacillus and Oceanobacillus within the class Bacilli. Detailed descriptions of the morphological, biochemical, and phylogenetic characteristics of these newly recorded species are provided.
