Polyaniline copolymer containing phenyl sulfonic acid sodium salt as the pendent group was chemically synthesized and its electrorheological (ER) properties were compared the the well-studied polyaniline ER fluid system. The copolymer was prepared using similar methods for the synthesis of homopolyaniline. It was then dispersed in silicone oil(30cS) to make the ER fluid. These fluids were found to have higher ER performance than those with the homopolymer. This is possibly due to the higher conductivity of the copolyaniline because of the preence of sodium ions in the side chain. This result was also correlated with the dielectric relaxation of the ER fluids in an applied electric field measured by an impedence analyzer.
