Effects of Lateral Fields on the Pixel and Parasitic Capacitances of TFT-LCDs

A novel method to calculate the pixel and inter-electrode capacitances of TFT-LCDs has been developed for the first time. It is based on the electrostatic energy obtained from 3-dimensional director and potential distribution profiles. The equation of motion of liquid crystal is expressed y tensorial formulation that includes anisotropic elastic constants. As a result, we confirmed that pixel capacitance is more than 40% larger compared with the conventional one. It is also revealed that the gate-common and gate-data inter-electrode capacitances show not negligibly large values.
