COMPARISON OD IN-VITRO CELL TEST RESULTS OBTAINED BY USING A PHARMACEUTICAL SURFACE-MODIFIED-POROUS SILICON AND INTRINSIC POROUS SILICON FOR TUMOR CELL ERADICATION

Porous silicon has many attractive properties for controlled drug delivery applications. For use of porous Si in various drug delivery applications functionalization of its surface is indispensable. In this study surface-modified PSi oxide was prepared by oxidizing porous silicon (PSi) thermally at 600 oC for 90 min. The results of in vitro cell tests such as MTT-assay, TUNEL-assay and FACS test obtained using the surface-modified PSi oxide and intrinsic PSi were compared. MTT-assay tests showed that the cell viability of SK-BR3 tumors treated with PSi oxide and laser irradiation at 1.0 W/cm2 for 20 min was about 10%. TUNEL-assay and FACS tests revealed that most cancer cells were destroyed in a necrosis mode but only about 3% of the cancer cells in a late apoptosis mode. These results suggest surface-modified PSi-O2 can be used effectively as an agent for cancer thermotherapy
