Motivating elements of TV travel shows to the public: Korean TV reality show cases

This study analyzed travel theme-based TV reality shows in Korea to determine the elements which motivate viewers to travel. This research was based on the inspiration of the recent trend of growing people’s interest in travel and increasing TV travel programs. With rapidly growing economy, people are more willing to take a trip and increasing number of people are motivated to set out on a trip while watching TV programs (Shin 2014). Through the case studies conducted by 16 participants who are viewers and reviewers, elements of each TV reality show which become motivating factors to the public drawing relationship between TV programs and tourism. Programs excite viewer’s passion to travel by providing information about travel, combining the features of reality show format with those of entertainment program, and making use of storytelling elements in the program. Overall, qualitative approach applied in the process of collecting reference materials, statistics about relationship between TV and the viewers, tourism studies and articles about recent TV travel programs. Observations and reviews made by the participants were analyzed as the main findings of this study. Findings indicate that viewers become stimulated to take a trip by a variety of elements delivered by TV programs. © Rushing Water Publishers Ltd. 2019.
