Group Key Management for Secure and Scalable Multicasting

Because of the increased interest using multicast on the Internet in order to deliver various data to a lot of users in the world, the issue of the security of multicast has recently come to the foreground. The MBone has provided a working example of multicast and has the enormous potential of multicast on the Internet. But, the use of multicast application have remained limited as the commercial point of view, until a level of security can be assured for multicast transmissions. In this paper, we purpose the approach to improve efficiency and practicality, in the architecture for secure and scalable multicasting. The architecture logically divides the multicast routing infrastructure from the key management plane into two types of region for key management to achieve scalability. Each key manage-ment region is associated with a different cryptographic key. To reduce the cost of re-keying and translation (decryptions followed by re-encryptions), the distri-bution of keys is handled dynamically.
