The forming limit of flange for producing a proper part without crack in the radial extrusion process is analyzed experimentally. Simulation results are compared with experimental data to verify the validity of the simulation results in view of global deformation. Flange shapes under the extrusion process are investigated and categorized into three patterns such as sticking, separating and cracking. The analysis in this paper is focused on the material flow into the gap in radial direction with various gap heights and die-corner radius. A single action pressing for the extrusion is applied to both simulation and experiment. The rigid-plastic finite element method is employed for analysis of simulation. Based on the experimental results, the effect of gap heights on the flange shape is found to be greater than that of die corner radius. The results presented in this paper might be used for basic data in the design of radial extrusion process.
