Influence of Data Signal on Transmission Characteristics of LCD Cells

The electro-optic characteristics of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) are constantly being improved. Several liquid crystal modes such as in-plane field switching (IPS)[1], fringe filed switching (FFS) [2] and vertical alignment (VA) [3] have shown wide viewing angle and fast response time in their own ways. One of the most useful LCD driving modes is VA mode, because of high contrast ratio and fast response time. Generally, VA mode uses a negative LC material with a pretilt angle of 90o a. In the case of ON state, LC director rotates vertically to the electric-field caused by the pixel and common electrode. However, there are fringe electric-field between the adjacent data line and the pixel electrode. Since the fringe electric-field between the adjacent data line and the pixel electrode is dependent on signal voltage, the electro-optical simulation considering the effect of signal voltage is required. We use ¨TechWiz LCD〃 for the electro-optical simulation.
