Improvement in Resistance Performance of a High Speed Boat with Air Lubrication

To investigate the effectiveness of air lubrication in improving the resistance performance of a practical ship, a small test boat with a backward facing step on the bottom has been manufactured and tested at the towing tank. The maximum towing speed of the ship is 17.5knots and changes in the resistance characteristics with air lubrication have been investigated at the several ship speed in between. The ship went through speed trials in a river and the results have been compared to those from towing tests. It is concluded that practical application of air lubrication to the resistance3 reduction of high-speed ships arerealizable.
