Numerical Simulation of Single-Mode Condition and Chromatic Dispersion of Silicon Optical Waveguides

Wave propagation modes and chromatic dispersion values of silicon optical waveguides (SOWs) have been numerically calculated for nonlinear optics applications especially for the four-wave-mixing (FWM). The single-mode condition and chromatic dispersion values of the SOWs are very important for an efficient FWM signal generation, and dependent on the waveguide geometry. The optimum waveguide widths have been determined from calculation with a Finite Element Method (FEM) for various silicon thicknesses on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafer.
