Background : Taurine plays a significant role in biological function such as brain function and fatigue recovery. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of supplementation with taurine-rich foods on school attitude assessment in high school students. Methods : One hundred fourty seven subjects were divided into taurine-rich food supplemented (TS) group (81 students) and control group (66 students). For TS group, school dinner supplemented with taurine-rich foods (including squid or webfoot octopus) had been provided for five days. Average amount of taurine supplemented in school dinner of TS group was 466.2mg. Control group had dinner at home or at restaurant ad libitum. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaire. School attitude assessment scores were measured using SAAS-R(School Attitude Assessment Surey-Revised), which was comprised of 27 items of five sub-scales including academic self-perceptions, attitudes toward teachers, attitudes toward school, goal valuation, and motivation/self-regulation. Dietary taurine intake data were obtained through the 24-hour recall method and analyzed using a computer-aided nutritional analysis program. Because pre-test scores of total and sub-scales in school attitude assessment showed significant difference between TS group and control group, pre-test scores were entered as covariate variable to perform ANCOVA. Statistical analysis were performed using SPSS 20.0 for Windows. Results : There were no significant differences in height, weight, and body mass index between the TS group and control group by gender. Average dietary intake of protein and taurine of TS group (99.7g and 614.0mg) were significantly higher (p<0.05 and p<0.001) compared to control group (75.4g and 351.4mg), respectively. Average dietary intake of total calorie, carbohydrate, lipid and calcium of TS and control group were 1,933.9kcal and 1,844.3kcal, 283.1g and 270.6g, 51.0g and 49.3g, and 667.8mg and 610.4mg, respectively.
