Magnetic Properties of Ultra-Thin MBE-Grown Co/Au/Co Tri-layers

In order to investigate the coupling effect between two magnetic layers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), we have performed Brilouin light scattering and magneto-optic Kerr effect measurements for ultra-thin MBE grown Co (6ML)/Au/Co(4ML) tri-layers with the Au interlayer's thickness being changed. We observed that the tri-layer behaves as a single layer with in-plane anisotropy withen the Au inter-layer was 0.5 nm, it does as a single layer with PMA when it is 1.0 nm, and it does as a double-layers each of which has own PMA when it is more than 1.5 nm. In addition, we observed the coupling effect, which was changed from anti-ferromagnetic to ferromagnetic, by just adding a 0.5 nm Au inter-layer.
